Birmingham, Al., January 21, 2014- Over 1700 athletes from across four states converged on the Birmingham Crossplex Monday to contest 28 track and field events for the nationally sanctioned MLK Indoor Classic. Teams traveled from as far away as New Orleans, LA to participate in this one day meet featuring some of the best track athletes in the South.

New MLK track records were set in almost all events, most notably the Men’s Pole Vault won by Sean Collins of McGill-Toolen with a jump of 15’03” – two feet higher than the previous record and the Men’s 4x200 Meter Relay team from Edna Carr High School of New Orleans, LA that ran a new record of 1:29.61.

The team competition saw Auburn Men’s team run away with the trophy with Homewood in second place and Central-Phenix City finishing in third. On the women’s side, Hoover and St. Paul’s went head to head all day with only two points separating the two when the final event was competed and Hoover was awarded the team trophy. Third place went to Mountain Brook.

About the MLK Indoor Classic

The MLK Indoor Classic is celebrating it’s 3rd year and is a partnership between the Birmingham City Schools Athletic Department and Southern Sports Group. This indoor track meet runs annually to coincide with the Martin Luther King holiday and is celebrated in the spirit for which the “I have a Dream” leader is remembered.
